I’m Erik Fryscok and I started programming when I took my first class in grade 10. From then on I just loved it and knew it was for me. So I took it all through grade 11 and 12 then went to college for it. I took the Computer Programmer Analyst program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. C++ was my favourite of all the languages we learned. Therefore I wanted more and took this graduate program called Game Development – Advanced Programming at Fanshawe.
So there’s a brief overview of me and programming. If you’d like you can read more and I’ll be a little more detailed. So during my studies in both programs at Fanshawe I competed in these programming contests. There was the International College Programming Contest (ICPC) at UWindsor and the School of IT Programming Challenge at Fanshawe. I went to the ICPC in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Our team didn’t place in 2015 but placed around 72nd out of about 130 in 2016! Then I think we were around 80th or 90th for 2017. As for the local Fanshawe contest it was a solo venture and I placed 2nd in 2016 and 3rd in 2017. Also for that one there were about 20 or 30 participants.
Those contests were really fun, but I also did some peer mentoring at Fanshawe as well. It’s actually a really cool program where the students in the later years of the program meet once a week to help/tutor some of the students in earlier years. This experience was very rewarding both with the connections you make and the help you can provide, but also can actually learn some things yourself.
Another thing outside of class that I did was make a PS4 mini-game. This was during the Game Dev program and was quite difficult. The PS4’s are much more difficult to program than on Windows. You have to do a lot more work on the console where as on the computer you don’t have to worry as much. So we had these Dev Kits and would work on them outside of class. I ended up making a Ball Toss game where you have to hit the wall that matched the color each ball before the time runs out.
Aside from those projects I just like to do stuff in my spare time. Either program some application or script to help make something easier/faster for myself. Or sometimes I program something because I’m just curious as to how it works. A lot of the time though I do some of the programming problems from the UVA Online Judge (similar to what was in those contests).
Apart from programming I play guitar, which I have been playing for about 3 years now. I just got a car so I want to start going on some road trips. I like to learn languages, Czech is my current and main language I like to learn. Though I do like to try and stay fresh in French as I learned that growing up. Also reading, whether it’s textbooks, novels, history, travel. I like health and fitness like running and doing calisthenics. I like to spend time with family and friends, that’s important to me.
Well gee that went on for a while but hey if you made it through my rambling good for you. I’m just passionate about programming and want to share my experience. If you’d like you can check out the rest of my site, there’s some example screen shots, videos, and links to code and such 🙂 Thanks for visiting!
